Barnsley Academy Decarbonisation scheme

C M Oxendale Ltd was appointed to deliver a comprehensive decarbonisation upgrade at Barnsley Academy, replacing legacy gas-fired heating with a modern, energyefficient Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) system. The project formed a key part of the academy’s longterm sustainability strategy, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and improving operational efficiency across the site.

This complex scheme required extensive building adaptations, mechanical upgrades, structural alterations and the creation of a new secure ASHP compound — all undertaken within a fully operational school environment.

ASHP System Installation

The core focus of the scheme was the installation of a highperformance ASHP system to serve the academy’s Low Temperature Hot Water (LTHW) network. This included full mechanical integration, electrical upgrades and BMS modifications to ensure the new system operated seamlessly with the building’s wider energy and control infrastructure.or modification prior to installation.

Structural Openings & Aluminium Plantroom Doors

To facilitate access to the new plantroom and support the revised building layout, C M Oxendale Ltd formed new structural openings within existing external walls. Precision cutting, temporary works and structural reinforcement were carried out to maintain building integrity.
Highquality aluminium-framed doors were installed to provide secure, durable access to the plantroom, improving both functionality and serviceability.

Construction of ASHP Compound

A new external compound was constructed to house and protect the ASHP units. This included:

  • Installation of a large structural steel frame
  • Supply and fitting of a GRP roofing system for weather protection.
  • Installation of safety fencing and gated access
  • Anti-vibration mounts and base supports for plant stability

The compound was designed to ensure safe maintenance access and long-term durability, while maintaining a visually clean and unobtrusive profile within the school grounds.

Challenges & Solutions

Working in a Live School Environment

All works were carried out with the academy fully operational. This required careful planning, segregation of work areas, strict safeguarding procedures and ongoing collaboration with school staff.
C M Oxendale Ltd ensured:

  • Zero disruption to teaching activities.
  • Controlled deliveries scheduled outside peak times
  • Safe pedestrian routes for pupils and staff
  • Noisemanaged working periods to avoid interference with lessons.

Outcome & Client Benefit

  • Successful transition to a lowcarbon heating system
  • Significant improvement in energy efficiency and reduction in carbon footprint
  • Enhanced maintainability through new plantroom access solutions
  • A safe, secure and longlasting ASHP compound designed for operational resilience
  • Smooth project delivery with no disruption to school operations

The Barnsley Academy ASHP and decarbonisation project demonstrates C M Oxendale Ltd.’s capability to deliver highly technical mechanical, electrical and structural upgrades within sensitive environments. By integrating innovative engineering solutions with robust project management, the team delivered a futureproof heating system that supports the academy’s sustainability goals while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality.
