Project Update | Manchester Royal Infirmary

We are pleased to share an update from our recent works at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), where our team successfully completed a planned steam shutdown to carry out important modifications to the existing steam and condensate systems.

The works were carefully planned to ensure that all modifications could be completed within a single shift, helping to minimise disruption within the hospital and allowing the steam system to be safely reinstated on the same day.

As part of the shutdown, our team completed the installation of two double block and bleed arrangements to the existing steam header. These arrangements have been installed to facilitate future connections, providing greater flexibility for upcoming works. The installation included positional welds and non-destructive testing (NDT) to verify the completed welds.

The team also carried out modifications to the existing condensate return pipework, allowing future connections to be made through the new double block and bleed arrangements. This forms an important part of preparing the existing system for future development while maintaining its current operation.

A further element of the works involved installing a bypass valve arrangement to allow for the future replacement of the condensate receiver. Planning for future maintenance and replacement works in this way helps reduce the need for significant disruption when the equipment eventually requires replacement.

Working within a live hospital environment means that careful planning, coordination and safe working practices are essential. The team worked efficiently throughout the shutdown to ensure the planned modifications were completed within the available window.

All modifications were successfully completed within one shift, allowing the steam system to be reinstated on the same day and helping to minimise disruption to the hospital.

It’s another example of our team delivering technically detailed works in a challenging environment, with a focus on safe delivery, efficient planning and preparing systems for future requirements.
